The Adventures of Little Nell came about one day when we were watching our beautiful Springer Spaniel play and we wondered what she got up to when she was left on her own.
The love of Nell’s life is her ball which she takes to bed in her crate each night. This gave us the idea that maybe the ball and crate together would enable her to secretly go on magical adventures.
From this we developed various ideas for her adventures which will appear in a series of books.
At the beginning of July last year Nell was diagnosed with IMHA and rushed to an emergency animal hospital, Vets Now Manchester. IMHA is an autoimmune disease which meant that her own body was killing all of her red blood cells. She went from being perfectly healthy one day to being critically ill the next.
Once at the hospital she was placed in critical care and remained there for five days where she received three blood transfusions. It was touch and go and we were told to prepare for the worst. However, thanks to the amazing care she received she slowly started to recover and came home after a week but would remain on medication for many weeks.
Now, at the start of 2018 Nell is off all medication and back to her old bouncy self!
Without the blood transfusions Nell would not have survived. The blood was supplied by the charity Pet Blood Bank which was started in 2007. Before this happened to Nell we were unaware of this charity and the work that they do, however now we want to do as much as we can to help raise awareness and promote this organisation.
